MOVIE REVIEW
Be Cool
Starring: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Vince Vaughn, The Rock, Cedric the Entertainer
Directed by: F. Gary Gray
Risky to turn out a film ten years after the original but with this cast and a dancing John Travolta, Be Cool manages to entertain the adult crowd with a witty script, a solid story and comical moments.
It focuses on ex-gangster Chili Palmer (Travolta) who decides he wants to transition from the film industry to the music industry with the help of his murdered friend's widow (Thurman) who he romances along the way. He finds a talented singer (an impressive performance by newcomer Christina Milian) and weaves his way along as old rivals seek to take him down.
Stand-outs include Vaughn as a music manager who thinks he's black-- he has the Hip Hop thing down to a science from voice to mannerisms-and his gay aspiring actor/bodyguard (very over-the-top, out there turn by The Rock, proving he has the mettle to do more than action films).
As sequels go, few end up being as good as or better than the originals (exceptions: Before Sunset and Spiderman 2), Be Cool is as cool as it can be.
