MOVIE REVIEW
Brooklyn Rules
Written by: Terence Winter
Directed by: Michael Corrente
Starring: Freddie Prinze Jr., Scott Caan, Alec Baldwin
Something about this film just does not work. Well, maybe not just one thing. Cheap dialogue ["How 'bout I'm treating you with respect and not like some fucking whore?" Yes, charming.]. Questionable casting [Freddie Prinze Jr. as Brooklyn guy trying to escape the 'hood? Right. There's nary anything tough or street about him]. I just didn't care about any of the characters and there was hardly a plot. This is highly unbelievable. One of The Sopranos writers, Terence Winter, is responsible for this mess of a script and if I were him I wouldn't want to admit it [although The Sopranos did have a few clunker episodes in between all that fabulousness]. The Sopranos became a huge success as it told mob stories that really explored every level of emotion and insecurity someone could possibly have. Brooklyn Rules tries way too hard to be A Bronx Tale and fails miserably.
