BURBANK FILM FESTIVAL
2009 marks the inaugural year of the Burbank International Film Festival which will take place March 22-29, 2009 at Woodbury University in Burbank, CA. Over the course of the week long event, a line-up of 77 tremendous films will screen. Six screenplay finalists round out the competition that received submissions from over 40 nations.
In addition to the incredible film line-up, the festival will host a myriad of special events. The opening night inauguration ceremony will kick off with a screening of the documentary The Brothers Warner by Cass Warner, granddaughter of one of the original founders of Warner Bros. Studios, Harry Warner. A full day of educational seminars taught by leading film industry professionals, the Los Angeles Premiere of the critically acclaimed film "How to Be" starring Robert Pattinson, a 50th Anniversary Celebration screening of the Academy Award nominated film On the Beach and a live musical performance by Academy Award nominated composer John Debney are just some of the highlights this festival has to offer.
The festival was founded by Val Tonione, a true Burbank native. Val states, "With Burbank being the site of most of the major studios, I felt that Burbank needed its own festival. This is a real media center and should be recognized."
The festival also keeps our planet's current issues and future in mind. A Socially Conscious category and screenings are part of the festival program. "We want to be a film festival that brings light to the issues in our world that need to be addressed," says Executive Director, Sharon Wissel. "Film is an incredibly powerful medium that can be utilized to inform viewers. It is important that we pay tribute and bring attention to the filmmakers in the world that are making a positive change." Sharon also started the festival's green initiative which resulted in many environmentally conscious efforts including use of the company InTicketing for ticket sales. InTicketing plants a tree for every ticket sold and their tickets are printed on recycled paper.
Among the festival's Honorary Board members are: Academy Award Nominated Composer John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Sin City, Spider-Man 2 & 3); 4-time Emmy Nominee Fred Willard (Best in Show); 5-time Emmy Award Winner Betty White (Golden Girls); 2-time Emmy Award Winner Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H); Dick Van Patten (Star on the Walk of Fame, Eight is Enough); Multi-Platinum musician Mark Slaughter; Golden Globe Winner Karen Kramer; Tony and 2-Time Emmy Nominee Joseph Campanella; famed tv/radio announcer Gary Owens (Laugh-In); actress/comedian Jo-Anne Worley (Wicked, Laugh-In) and actor John Schuck (McMillan & Wife, Broadway).
The Burbank International Film Festival captures its home city's rich history and movie making magic by promoting fresh pieces of cinematic art by up and coming filmmakers from around the globe. The festival shines a light on the brilliant unknown talents of today, leading them to become the celebrated filmmakers of tomorrow.
