MOVIE REVIEW
Crash
Starring: Don Cheadle, Ryan Phillippe, Matt Dillon, Sandra Bullock, Thandie Newton, Jennifer Esposito, Brendan Fraser
This film is nothing short of astonishing. It is bold, provocative and poignant and that's within the first 15 minutes.
With remarkable performances by an ensemble cast, Crash, dares to journey where few films do. A cross-section of people-police officers, Hollywood directors, car-jackers, Middle-Eastern shop owners, wives, district attorneys-collide in unexpected ways. Prejudices are out in the open. It is gritty and it is real.
It is the way that most people are thinking but few will actually say and this is refreshing, yet often heartbreaking. The honesty is rare and a great relief. The screenplay is brilliant. The acting is even more so.
Cheadle plays it subtle as a detective with a brother who is involved in criminal activity and a relationship with his partner played with gutsy heart by Esposito.
It is fantastic to see Phillippe escape his typical cad preppy roles for a meatier role as a street cop with convictions.
And Bullock is grand as a bitchy, spoiled wife of the Los Angeles District Attorney (Fraser).
Crash is a potent film that will force you to think and keep a dialogue going long after the end credits.
