MOVIE REVIEW
The Devil Wears Prada
Starring: Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway
Fox 2000 Pictures
Just got back from seeing The Devil Wears Prada. I read the book and really liked it; the film does not delve into the evil aspects of the magazine world as much as the book did. That's fine. It does not have to be an exact re-telling. However, this film is as glossy as the magazine which serves as the backdrop and focus for the film.
Hathaway plays an idealistic Northwestern University graduate with journalistic dreams. She realizes finding a job is harder than she thought and she applies to be a personal assistant to Miranda Priestly (Streep), Editor-in-Chief of Runway magazine. Soon her personal life takes a backseat to the dismay of her boyfriend (Entourage's Adrian Grenier) and friends. But that is what working your way up entails. And I imagine doubly so in the magazine and newspaper Mecca of New York This film did make me regret not going to NYU for my masters in journalism or taking a part time job at the Washington Times or working for the summer at USA Today. How different my life might be at this point.
Anne Hathaway is fantastic and Meryl Streep is well, incomparable. But as much as she tries to act her way through this film, it is just a one dimensional role. (If you have an aching to see Meryl, go see Altman's Prairie Home Companion instead). I laughed at a few jokes but there weren't enough to make the film. Something just did not click. Perhaps it was the screenplay because I did not care about either character or the outcome of their careers. The fashion was not outrageously enviable by any means. I expected much more. And that makes a bad film for me. The soundtrack is quite good.
My recommendation: wait for the DVD and read the book.
