MOVIE REVIEW
The Good German
Starring: George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Tobey Maguire
Directed by: Steven Soderbergh
There's a raw look and romantic feel to Steven Soderbergh's The Good German. The story may be a bit twisty and the characters rather unlikable but the film as a whole is a treat to watch. Yes, it harkens back to the glory days of "Old Hollywood" with the noir films and it works with this story. The time frame is right and the camera shots, acting and even soundtrack pay homage to the genre.
Jake [George Clooney] comes to Potsdam to cover the Peace Summit and uncovers another story entirely; one in which he becomes a major player. It involves an ex-lover, Lena [Cate Blanchett] and another American, Tully [Tobey Maguire]-a dirty character who is clutching to the power that post-war Germany provides him as a member of the military and a bit player in the Black Market.
The interwoven, mysterious storyline is confusing at times but it adds to the overall feel of this film. While every aspect may not fall into place [Clooney is not exactly the face of a yesteryear's matinee idol], Soderbergh made a commendable effort.
The actors put in a solid effort and the supporting cast [especially the juicy role played by scene-stealer Robin Weigert as Lena's roommate-even just chomping away at a ham sandwich she's a pleasure to watch] add to the overall appeal that makes The Good German an enjoyable film to watch.
