MOVIE REVIEW
Happy Endings
Starring: Lisa Kudrow, Jason Ritter, Steve Coogan, Tom Arnold, Maggie Gyllenhaal
Dark, unexpected and not always so happy but very satisfying to the audience, Happy Endings is a wonderful film by Don Roos.
It starts with Mamie (Kudrow) running down a hill and getting hit by a car and then backing up to find out how she ended in that position.
There are three storylines that trace love and manipulation and criss-cross each other to varying degrees.
Kudrow is fantastic as a dark, unsatisfied woman with many regrets who looks at life through cynical eyes.
Coogan is her half-brother, a like-able, yet over-eager gay guy who ruins his near-perfect relationship with his jealousy and insecurity.
A remarkable performance is that of Arnold as the wealthy yet insecure and easily manipulated Frank, father of the sexually conflicted daughter (Ritter).
Early on, Jude (a sexy, strong Gyllenhaal) sees the dollar signs before her eyes and manages to get a proposal from him. She's spunky, selfish and fun to hate. It's a tragic-comedy where you can identify with almost every character at some moment. Some characters you like and some you do not.
In this film you find humor in even the most terrible intense moments especially when you see them in someone else's life. One of the characters sums up the attraction to this film very well, Javier (Bobby Cannavale), Mamie's boyfriend states: "Their lives are so ordinary- not good, not bad, medium. They want something more."
