MOVIE REVIEW
In Her Shoes
Starring: Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, Shirley MacLaine
Directed by: Curtis Hanson
Screenplay by: Susannah Grant
Can more than an appreciation for stylish shoes keep two sisters together?
Maggie (Diaz), the misdirected "party girl" looks at her life as a series of short-term relationships and a lot of fun while her sister Rose, a lawyer, is terribly serious. She wants her sister to be the same way: get a job, support herself and stop falling back on her when she gets in trouble. In other words, grow up and become a self-sufficient adult.
But Rose has her own problems with self-image and yo-yo weight issues. Her insecurity balances her sister's brazen behavior.
When a major argument splits the sisters for what seems like the final time, Maggie moves to Florida and in with the grandmother neither sister ever really knew (MacLaine). She shapes up her mind, while her sister shapes up hers (and her body), gaining a finance in the meantime.
The two sisters may seem like polar opposites but they have certain commonalities and find that they actually need each other.
Diaz turns her role into a moving one where a former girl who lived for fun now has more focus and purpose. She is wonderful as always.
Collette, as her older sister, is very good as well in turning from someone very dowdy and serious to someone who can appreciate the smaller moments in life that can make one happy. The sisters inadvertently learn from each other's personalities.
The film is about being yourself and being happy within your own shoes. MacLaine grounds the film as a sarcastic grandmother able to make up for lost time but providing savvy advice and comfort.
In Her Shoes is certainly not perfect or unpredictable but it's a sweet story to watch unfold.
