In this ingenious, fresh film, two paths for one woman's circumstances are examined in a humorous version and a darker, tragic version.

Melinda-in an impressive performance from Radha Mitchell (High Art) that shows great range and allows her to delve into the two different personas-- strives to get her life back on track. In the darker version we find Melinda crashing a dinner party at her college friend's Manhattan apartment.

Chloe Sevigny shines as the sharp, preppy Laurel, who is married to theater teacher and frustrated actor Jonny Lee Miller. In the parallel version, Melinda finds herself seeking solace with a neighboring couple.

Amanda Peet is an optimistic, aggressive film maker and Will Ferrell proves he can act in the designated "Woody Allen" role as a neurotic, out-of-work actor.

Interestingly, Allen has carved out strong female roles in both couples, where the women know who they are and what they want and the men seem to flounder, perhaps to contrast with the conflicted Melinda. Both Melinda's are insecure women whose decisions are based more are led by their hearts but achingly analyzed in their minds. She's a character to whom one can easily relate.

Melinda and Melinda allows Woody Allen to shift back to his earlier films with this stellar script and impressive ensemble cast.
