MOVIE REVIEW
Ocean's 13
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Starring: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Don Cheadle
Rusty: Try to keep the pounds off in between.
Danny: Why don't you settle down? Have a few kids.
In between art projects-- The Good German with George Clooney and Cate Blanchett and the upcoming thriller Michael Clayton with Clooney and Tilda Swinton-- Steven Soderbergh helms this star-studded cast for a third round. This time it is a knock-out with a slick, stylized film. From the moment Ocean and Rusty fly in on the private jet to the last scene in the airport, Ocean's 13 is a kick. The shots of Vegas make you want to hop on the next flight there. Vegas is as much a character in this after all and Soderbergh shows the beauty in the architecture, the facades, the glitter and the wealth.
The story: Banks [Al Pacino] screws over Reuben [Elliot Gould] in a business deal. He suffers a myocardial infarction [heart attack] and the boys circle the wagons and embank on revenge. One night. One big take from the new Banks casino on opening night.
It is hard to follow every little nuance in the grand scheme. Really, there's no need to understand the details in this heist. Clooney [Danny Ocean] and Brad Pitt [Rusty] have a comfortable, easy rapport. Mix in Matt Damon and there is even more chemistry. Damon also has super moments with a fake nose and in scenes with Ellen Barkin. Casey Affleck and Scott Caan are great together. Particularly when they get caught up in a labor dispute at a dice factory in Mexico [they have infiltrated to make special dice for their con]. A Spanish-speaking Affleck bonds with Mexican factory workers making $3.00/week. Brilliant.
Other highlights: a green-tea sipping, sandal-wearing Eddie Izzard, Don Cheadle's sensitive, posh-speaking Basher, many nifty "how did they do that" high-tech gadgetry and synchronicity, the multiple disguises and new identities and Oprah moments [I don't want to spoil them].
You don't run the same gag twice, you do the next gag.

Ocean's 13 is a fun romp for a group of pals. The boys are back and having a grand time. These are characters that they step back into like a worn pair of jeans. The actors handle this project with simplicity and ease. A better script this go-round makes this one a keeper. There's easygoing, breezy and fun banter. The script has some grand zingers-real laugh out loud moments. It is thoroughly entertaining. Sure, it is a vanity project but it is a good one. Plenty of zing, polish and eye candy. Ocean's 13 is completely satisfying. You're getting exactly what you expect: an ideal summer popcorn flick.
Steele recommendation: See it in the theater
