Proof
Starring: Gwyneth Paltrow, Jake Gyllenthaal, Anthony Hopkins, Hope Davis
Miramax Films
As a daughter copes with the death of her brilliant but mentally ill mathematician father, her previously lonely existence becomes stirred up in several ways.
Catherine (Paltrow) wants nothing more than to stay in her father's home and remember his better days and hope her future does not mirror his.
Her sister, Claire, (Davis) arrives for the funeral with every intention to sell the house and sweep little sister off to New York to fix her.
One of her father's ex-students, Hal, (Gyllenthaal) wants nothing more than to pore through all his notebooks (more than 100) that the father wrote in the last few years of his life while his daughter quit school and took care of him.
When the "golden notebook" containing a remarkable proof is discovered and Catherine says she wrote it, suddenly both Hal and Claire believe she may really be a bit unstable or having a mental breakdown. Did she or didn't she write the proof?
This is a moving, brilliant film with layered characters that have genuine flaws. Paltrow turns in an outstanding performance that seeps out grief and vulnerability and makes her character so real and likeable.
