Sleeper Cell: American Terror
By Amy Steele
It's not all black and white in the second season of this fascinating show that spotlights radical Muslims planning a dirty bomb attack in Los Angeles.
In its second season, Sleeper Cell focuses on undercover FBI agent Darwin [Michael Ealy] and the newest cell he has infiltrated.
When the nanny-turned radical [Thekla Reuten] in his cell discovers Darwin's American and non-Muslim girlfriend [Melissa Sagemiller], she becomes unwillingly involved with the FBI.
Sleeper Cell highlights many aspects of the Muslim faith. It can be interpreted as broadly as Catholicism or Christianity. What makes this show work is that it shows real people, with real struggles, fallacies and challenges to follow their faith and to execute what they think their raison d'etre: the suicide mission.
There's no empathy for why these people feel that destroying Americans is the route toward being a true, good Muslim. However, these layered terrorists have families and girlfriends and boyfriends and secret social lives that are incongruent with the Holy Qur'an which they utilize to guide their actions. In this, one can feel some connection.
Sleeper Cell is frightening, heartbreaking and riveting.
