MOVIE REVIEW
Thank You For Smoking
Starring: Aaron Eckhardt, Maria Bello, Adam Brody, William H. Macy, Katie Holmes
Written and Directed by: Jason Reitman
Nick Naylor (Eckhardt) is a lobbyist for Big Tobacco. He's arrogant, extremely effective and unapologetic for his job and the position he takes.
Thank You for Smoking makes fun of everything from politics to Hollywood.
Eckhardt morphs into different roles with ease and makes even the most unlikable character a bit charming.
Macy brings a few chuckles by playing a Birkenstock-wearing, cheddar cheese and maple syrup loving liberal senator from Vermont attempting to take down the tobacco business.
Rob Lowe is a smarmy Hollywood type and its evident he enjoys every bit of his juicy little scenes that dismantle stereotypical film fantasy.
Holmes is good as a brassy reporter who falls into Naylor's web.
Some of the best scenes are of the MOD squad-Naylor gathers for drinks with a gun (David Koechner) and alcohol (Bello) lobbyist regularly -- they trade quips about death statistics and problems arising for their clients. Death is just another dollar, another day.
Priceless moments and you want to see more of the trio ripping apart American lifestyles. Many laughs. Naylor takes his son with him and tries to be a role model though his interactions with the Marlboro Man (Sam Elliot) or on a trip to the West Coast sometimes are difficult to explain to a 12-year-old. The kid has great energy.
Thank You for Smoking avoids taking sides or being preachy-- Reitman's film instead is an amusing, unabashedly sarcastic film about cigarettes without featuring one character actually inhaling. While lagging here and there (it could have been slightly sharper), it's a good overall effort.
Grade: ** 1/2
