MOVIE REVIEW
The Hoax: on DVD
Review by Amy Steele
Starring: Richard Gere, Alfred Molina, Hope Davis, Marcia Gay Harden
What a gem. This is a must-see film, based on a true story of a million dollar con in the early 70s.
Clifford Irving [Gere], an under-appreciated writer almost succeeds in passing off an autobiography that he penned of the elusive Howard Hughes in the 1970s. Irving [Gere] keeps getting rejection after rejection until he comes up with the perfect pitch: the autobiography of a mysterious recluse. Not any recluse but billionaire media tycoon Howard Hughes.
Irving charms everyone so well with his idea that he soon gets an advance and it appears to be straight to press. Why would Hughes want to say anything, Irving reasons? His friends get in on the scheme and they gather enough information to make it seem like this is really Hughes's idea. They almost get away with it too.
Lasse Hallstrom directed a magnificent film. There's intrigue, humor and unpredictability and amazing performances. Gere steps out of the romantic lead box and impresses in this role.
Alfred Molina is fabulous as his researcher/ best friend. Hope Davis is tough as his agent while Marcia Gay Harden boldly plays his beleaguered wife.
