This film grabs you by the throat and never lets up even after it has ended. It is suspenseful, provocative and disturbing.

It analyzes the roots of violence in society to a degree through the eyes of one small town man Tom Stall (Mortensen) who defends his diner in the small town he lives in with his family.

Suddenly he is a hero but he garners more attention from a gang of Philadelphia mobsters who are convinced he is one of their guys who disappeared years ago.

Can a man make a new life for himself? Can someone with a violent history change? Is Tom Stall who he says he is and has been living as for many years with his wife (Bello).

The performances are nuanced and highly effective. Mortensen is brilliant as this quiet guy who might have been a gangster when he was younger.

The brutality, bloodshed, rough sex scenes all add to this portrait of a man with a past that confuses his wife and teenage son. Will it change the relationship and quiet life he has chosen to live at this time?

I highly recommend A History of Violence even though I couldn't get to sleep for hours after I saw it.

Grade: ****
