PLASTIC SURGEON OFFERS MINI PROCEDURES
By Sarah Kelly
An increasing number of plastic surgery patients are opting to undergo ground-breaking new surgical techniques known as "mini" procedures. San Francisco board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Randall Weil is a physician who routinely performs these mini procedures and advocates them as highly effective, less-invasive alternatives to a face lift. There are three main types of mini procedures: liposuction or liposculpture of the neck, cheek lifts and neck lifts.
Of these three procedures, liposculpture of the neck is the least invasive and, according to Dr. Weil, the most popular. Dr. Weil reports that a large percentage of his patients are unhappy with their neck area, and liposculpture is well-suited for individuals with loose skin or heaviness in the neck. Performed under local anesthesia, the procedure takes about 30 minutes and creates a significant improvement in the neck area by removing fat and tightening the skin without incisions. The patient is able to go home a half an hour after the surgery and the recovery time is only about 3 or 4 days.
The cheek lift is a mini procedure that is geared toward patients with sagging jowls and crease lines between the nose and mouth. This surgery is performed by creating an incision in front of the ear behind the ear flap, a technique which keeps the incision hidden. The surgery takes 1 to 1 _ hours and the recovery time is about a week.
The neck lift is a mini procedure that reduces sagging skin and weak muscles and eliminates excess fat in the neck and under the jaw line. While more invasive than liposculpture of the neck, this procedure also produces more dramatic results. The surgery takes about two hours, and the recovery time is about 7-10 days, significantly shorter than the time required to recover from a full face lift.
Speaking to the popularity of mini procedures, Dr. Weil emphasizes that they allow patients to approach plastic surgery as a "maintenance program." The idea behind this approach is that a patient can "maintain a youthful appearance over a period of many years."
Dr. Weil believes that mini procedures will continue to be a growing trend in the world of plastic surgery. Not only are they less invasive than face lifts, they also are much less expensive.
Dr. Weil is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the California Society of Plastic Surgeons and the San Francisco Medical Society. He is also the Chief of Surgery at St. Mary's Medical Center.
