The New Face of Insurance
Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places. Or at least it did for Andrew Kagan, Chief Executive Officer of Surgical Risk Solutions: Complication Insurance.
While in law school, Kagan wasn't interested in the medical insurance
industry until he heard the tragic story of a man in Fort Myers, Florida. After
undergoing an operation, the man was thought to be healthy enough to undergo
physical therapy. After a few weeks of therapy the man was admitted to the hospital and died as a result of complications from his surgery. His family was left without the means to pay
the resulting bills.
After hearing this tale, Kagan felt that there had to be some way of protecting patients and their families from the potential risks of surgery. After careful thought and consideration, the nation's first protection against surgery was
born. Kagan had developed the concept of Complication Insurance.
In this process, the patient purchases Complication Insurance pre-surgery. Over 70 of the most common procedures are covered, including most orthopedic, plastic and general elective surgeries, depending on the risk factor for the procedure. Only brain and heart surgeries are not covered by this particular insurance, as of yet.
No other insurance product covers surgery, although it meets a tremendous need that has long been lacking in the healthcare marketplace. "Most of the population doesn't carry life insurance anymore," explains Kagan. "No other insurance covers what Complication Insurance covers."
As the first surgical complication model on the market, Complication Insurance has been met with great feedback. "Surgeons have embraced it as a risk management tool," Kagan continues, "while patients appreciate that Complication Insurance is such an affordable way to cover against catastrophic surgical outcomes.
Applicants fill out a quick online application and make payment via credit card to get a $250,000 insurance policy for their $100 investment.
Complication Insurance is currently offered in 12 states, including California, with plans to eventually expand to the rest of the U.S. as soon as possible. "We really want to get the word out that this product exists," Kagan concludes. "Once people know about it, Complication Insurance can help protect patients and their families in case the worst happens."
