ADRIENNE
By Amy Jones
She recorded her second full-length CD, inked a deal with the hot, new denim line, Vigoss Jeans, as their international spokesmodel, and rang in the new year in front of thousands of Brazilian fans. Pop sensation Adrienne Lau somehow found the time to sit down to speak with us about her career and where she is headed next.
Adrienne just completed her new album. Her songs are laced with memorable hook lines, intertwined with haunting melodies that captivates and endears the listener to her music. Her writers and producers include recently featured dynamic duo, in Billboard as "Hot Producers to Watch," the co-stars (Tiara Marie and Fantasia) produced a number of tracks in the album. Others worthy of mention are the following: Belawa Mohammed (Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears), Storm (Usher) and Damon Elliot (Destiny's Child, Jessica Simpson, Beyonce, Pink, Mya and Macy Gray).
But if her music didn't keep Adrienne busy enough, she also recently signed a deal to be the new international spokes model for Vigoss Jeans. Vigoss Jeans is quickly becoming a household name, especially after they paired up with Tyra Banks and America's Next Top Model to become the official jeans of the hit reality show. Vigoss is launching an international campaign with Adrienne where she will appear in advertisements and at Vigoss events all over the world.
And, in the past several months alone, Adrienne headlined a Brazilian New Years Eve celebration, ringing in the new year for over 20,000 Brazilian fans. She then headed halfway around the world to southern France for the international music conference MIDEM before heading to Detroit for Superbowl XL. Two days after returning to Los Angeles from Detroit, Adrienne began the whirlwind life of a pop star again. At the private pre-Grammy Kanye West concert, Adrienne met up with friends and mingled with Hollywood's hottest stars including Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Tom Cruise, Seth Green and Joshua Jackson. She attended the Grammys and then after the award show, it was off to the G.O.O.D. Music Party to celebrate Kanye West's three Grammy wins and John Legend's achievement for Best New Artist. While there, Adrienne mingled with John Legend, Common, Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Sean Paul and Brandy.
Recently, we had the rare opportunity to speak with Adrienne about her career goals, what life is like in the entertainment industry and what we can expect from her in the future.
For those who don't know, where were you born and raised?
I was born in Hong Kong and I was raised in both Hong Kong and LA.
You sing, write and act. What was your first ambition and what influenced you growing up?
I wanted to be a well-rounded entertainer growing up, I just have had that passion ever since I was young. I love acting and I love music, so it is really hard to choose between the two. When I was in school at UCLA and in high school, I tried to hone my acting and singing skills and I took a lot of classes. I listen to Mariah Carey, I love her voice; I listen to Madonna because of her versatility. I really like Beyonce, I think she has the whole package.
How do you feel about being one of the first Asian American pop stars to reach stardom status?
I feel very honored and happy that people are recognizing and paying so much attention to my work. There are many Asian American performers out there and I am working hard to pave the road for others. I hope that more and more Asian American talent will be recognized.
Can you tell us about your reality show "The Life of A Pop Star"?
The reality show cameras go everywhere with me, they are at my tours, my hotel room, my performances, my dinners and my conversations. They went to UK, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Brazil, Canada, and also around the U.S. with me. It shows everybody my good times, hard times, my eating habits, everything.... my parents were also interviewed in the show and they talk about how I was when I was growing up.
What can the fans expect from your new self-titled album "Adrienne", which is due in shortly?
You guys can expect an album that brings very positive message, I co wrote a lot of songs, one of them is called Wanna be Happy, there are other ones called For the Ladies, We are Family and Dream which encourage people to pursue their dreams, and of course lots of love and relationship songs as well.
Who did you work with on the album, and what was it like working with them?
I worked with Petey Pablo on my single You're the One and Mya on Extacy. The co-stars produced a few records for me and I also co wrote with a writer that writes hit songs for Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. It was such a great time working with these people, I learned a lot from my collaborations with them.
Can you describe "You're the One"?
You're the One is one of my favorite songs on the album. I loved the beat when I first heard it. It makes people move, it has a great hook line and it's definitely a great club hit.
How did your tours go last year? And, do you plan on touring after the release the new album?
The tour was great last year, I love performing and meeting my fans. So I am definitely going on tour again for this upcoming album. I already did some promotional gigs in the States, and we are going to tour Europe and Asia and all across the Untied States.
What hobbies do you have, when you're not recording or writing music?
I love watching movies and I love to eat. Like most girls, I am into fashion and I love shopping!
What advice would you give to all up and coming artists trying to reach the level you are at today?
Follow your dreams, do not let anyone take you away from your dreams, and work hard towards them. It is not going to be easy, there are going to be a lot of obstacles but believe in yourself and you will
get there. Always perfect your skills and strive to be better.
Thank you for doing this interview. Do you have any last words for the readers?
Big thank you to all my fans and everyone who supports me! Couldn't have done it without all of you guys.
