MUSIC REVIEW
Band: Kelly Buchanan
Album: "Bastard Daughter"
Label: Velvet Ear Records
New York-based Kelly Buchanan's voice can range from angry and feverish to gentle and melodic. She has so much infectious energy.
On Bastard Daughter, Buchanan infuses every song with bravado and heart and truth. She seems kind of bitter, kind of dark, kind of like she's working through her anger and disappointments by writing songs and that is kind of cool.
The album kicks in with the potent rocker: "Letter in Your Mailbox" -- the perfect breakup song. Other songs include the thrasher "Cocaine," the stunningly haunting "Body Bag" which addresses all the complicated layers of rape and sexual abuse and "Favorite Jeans," where she again showcases her hypnotic vocal talents with a few choice words about a lover: "I've got a lifetime of fuck-ups to prove it to you. But you stay with me/ I hope you never grow tired of me."
Bastard Daughter is really a cool, kicky listen.
