MUSIC REVIEW
Band: Kelly Clarkson
Album: "Breakaway"
Label: RCA Records
I have watched perhaps two or three episodes of American Idol and I TiVoed them and fast-forwarded through the singing parts. I'm not impressed or drawn up in any of the hoopla surrounding it all.
Right from the first chord on her sophomore album, Breakaway, you realize that Kelly Clarkson is not some lightweight, forgettable, "created by a television show" pop star. Her vocals are similar to Fiona Apple's: bold and guttural.
She shows a dramatic edginess on the urgent "Since You Been Gone," about the aftermath and flood of emotions involved in a break-up. The title track is extremely catchy with its chorus: "Make a wish, take a chance, make a change and breakaway."
She's savvy in drawing in all types of influences from rock to blues to techno on this album. "Because of You" has funky side to it. Clarkson softens on "You Found Me."
Kelly Clarkson titled this album fittingly. She has distanced herself from the American Idol status and has become a pop star with her stunning vocals and independent nature. She is strong and tough.
Breakaway makes her a genuine pop star.
