Doves - Some Cities Band: Doves
Album: "Some Cities"

For the third album, Some Cities, by this UK trio, Doves decided to approach the process from a completely different manner to that which that had been used to on earlier releases. It was time to throw away the manual and be less stringent about any rules for recording that many bands follow. It usually consists of going over and over a song until the raw talent is stripped away.

"Instead of precise production we just played," said Jez Williams, singer/guitarist. "We set up our own recording studio in a (former) school in Scotland. A normal studio reminds me of a bank--a clinical, soulless place and a good reason for not recording in a studio."

The result is an exquisite collection of breezy melancholic songs. Truly romantic. It's perfect background music for dinner or to calm down after a long day with some chamomile tea. The songs stay in your head in a soothing way. Songs include the stunning title track, "Some Cities," the kicky 70's retro intro and harmonizing chorus on "Black and White Town," the luscious "Almost Forgot Myself" and the ethereal "Snowden."

The trio's psychedelic pop with trippy guitar, groovy drum tracks and trance-inducing vocals combines club beats with old school jamming and melodic sensibilities. This album is much catchier and upbeat than past efforts. It is not surprising that the band met as teenagers at the Hacienda club (a famous club in Manchester, England that spawned the likes of Ecstasy-loving bands like Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Blur and Oasis). After trying out a few different bands, Doves formed. Jez and twin Jimi Williams and school chum Jim Goodwin. And there's something about it that clicks.

"Doves is a democracy. It's about giving each other new ideas and if you go in one direction, you can go in another. The band is a unit and has chemistry and generally it's about a unified will."

Currently the band is embarking on a live tour throughout the United States. Don't expect a live show to sound like a louder version of the album or a set with little crowd interaction (like Coldplay recently).

"We re-interpret our songs for a live show. We use visuals to accompany the songs. The sets are always changing and progressing with the imagery. Technology is amazing. It's fantastic to show a visual side to the music."

Show dates:
Friday May 20 Boston
Sunday May 22 Philadelphia
Monday May 23 Washington DC
Friday June 10 Portland OR
