MUSIC REVIEW
Band: Minnie Driver
Album: "Everything I've Got in My Pocket"
Label: Zoe Records
If this is the real Minnie Driver revealing herself through her lyrics and music than she's been damaged and hurt like many of us but she is also strong and independent.
Her soothing, romantic, vocals are a cross between Heather Nova and a mellow Sheryl Crow. It's a fine album; it just doesn't have any standout tracks.
Everything I've Got in My Pocket is best played from beginning to end. It makes lovely background music for dinner or a quiet night at home. The songs are sad and wistful and tender. This is an admirable debut album for someone known more for her boyfriends than her films.
Driver writes her own words and also most of the music. Her songs straddle the lines of pop, country and folk with deft success. She exhibits range on the melodic "So Well." Her slow, deliberate rendition of "Hungry Heart" is soulful. "Invisible Girl" is strong and energetic-"Heart shines like a neon sign/for tonight won't you just be mine/invisible girl, in the sodium light/ she's the Queen of the Night."
I think Driver has talent and needs to hone it and develop more of a standout style if she wants to make an impression in this fickle industry.
