Who better to take it to a new level and stir things up by releasing the unexpected than Green Day?

Anyone who dismissed the punk rockers as simple three chord-ers may be stunned by the maturity and completeness of this brilliant album. It kicks in on the anthemic "American Idiot" which boasts classic Green Day energy.

The entire album is thoughtful, provocative and fully loaded. The layered "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," resonates with sheer heart-aching beauty.

Green Day straddles a few different genres and styles and experiments with arrangements and instrumentation in such a way to put itself at the upper echelon of artist expression. Vitality and charm tie the songs together from the luscious "Give Me Novacaine" to the sharp "She's a Rebel" to the lovely harmonies of "Wake Me Up When September Ends." A memorable force from a talented young band that proves it has staying power.

Meshing elements of hope and despair, American Idiot is an honest and unique album. One of 2004's best that will quickly become a classic.
