Band: Keren Ann
Album: "Nolita"
Label: Metro Blue Recordings
Dividing her time between the glamour of Paris and the grit of New York City, French chanteuse Keren Ann builds on her experiences in two very chic and very different cities and cultures for her sophomore U.S. release Nolita.
When she sings, the emotional realm engulfs you. Nolita is a haunting, beautiful, sexy, mysterious, dangerous and sad album all wrapped into one. Misty rain, an abandoned lover, an impressive Parisian view with the cat brushing up against you.
When Keren Ann turns out songs in English they take on an interesting cross between Asian pop songs (think Kill Bill soundtrack) and cabaret. "Que n'ai je" tells about a woman who is being stalked, "Chelsea Burns" features the funk of the mandolin and "Greatest You Can Find" delves into an all-encompassing love while the spooky title track focuses on suffocation.
The perfect collection of songs for varying shades of melancholy. And this is a wonderful thing because it's rare -- not many artists have the breadth to encompass such raw emotions, to seep into your psyche, to become part of your thoughts.
It's at the top of the pile of CDs for me this month. My new favorite artist.
