The Panic Channel
May 26, 2006
Paradise Rock Club, Boston

For those wanting to see guitar virtuoso Dave Navarro in action, last Friday night was certainly the place to be. A sparse crowd, most likely due to the holiday weekend, humid Boston weather and a Red Sox game, certainly got a thrill. Navarro's new band The Panic Channel featuring pal and drummer Stephen Perkins (ex-Jane's Addiction member and Dave's best man at his wedding to Carmen Elektra), vocalist Steve Isaacs and bassist Chris Chaney ripped into an hour long set of heavy metal with screaming lyrics, grinding guitar and loud drums.

The Panic Channel

On Panic Channel's website, Dave and the band thought the Paradise was outside of Boston. Interesting. Guess they did not notice all the BOSTON UNIVERSITY police cars and buildings and signage around. Hmm. Not too observant these guys. At one point, Isaacs said, "I don't want to get too political on you. Are you a red or a blue state?" What, how is this political? If you don't know the red/blue state breakdown, don't discuss.

To top it off, Dave lit up a cigarette on stage and was told to put it out. He grabbed the mic and said, "I can't believe you can't fuckin' smoke in here." Okay, Dave you live in Los Angeles, the city that first banned indoor smoking in venues including bars and nightclubs. Would it be a surprise if you COULD smoke somewhere? I still think Dave is hot and would be fun to hang out with.

The Panic Channel

Isaacs sings in a yearning style that is set off by heavy, dark rhythm and melodies. Panic Channel is technically solid with plenty of talent but it seemed more about the guitar licks and LONG instrumental sections (one song clocked in at around eight minutes), thus making the set long as the band only has enough new material for one album. Panic Channel is mostly a yelling, vent-style vanity project. The songs blended together and when everything was over, nothing stood out in my head.

If you are into watching guys and most notably the sexy Dave Navarro jam out, this is the ticket for you.
