MUSIC REVIEW
Band: Trashcan Sinatras
Album: "Weightlifting"
Label: spinART Records (U.S.) and Picnic Records (U.K.)
15 years ago, Trashcan Sinatras make a splash on the indie scene with the album "Cake" and its catchy hits "Obscurity Knocks" and "Only Tongue Can Tell." The band became fast darlings for alternative and college radio stations. In 1999, the band found themselves deep in debt instead of gaining money and notoriety as many other Brit bands in the early to mid-nineties (Charlatans, Blur, Oasis, Jesus Jones, James) did. The "trashies" went on a forced hiatus of sorts to get things more organized.
"We didn't split up but we stopped doing things," explained lead guitarist Paul Livingston by phone from Los Angeles. "It's just a continuation of the past after a big gap."
Trashcan Sinatras latest release is a burst of sunshine. Weightlifting is a lush album with breathtaking melodies and bittersweet harmonies. With songs like the energetic and appropriate "Welcome back, welcome back"-"Welcome back, back to health. Back from the edge where we found you."All the Dark Horses" (mixed by New York's Andy Chase of the charming band Ivy), "What Women Do to Men," and "Trouble Sleeping," the album holds more complexity and depth than earlier works and will be appreciated by new and old fans alike. Of course the band members are now in their thirties instead of their late teens or early twenties. Much has changed and it is reflected through very provocative, thoughtful music. Teenage Fanclub's glorious singer Norman Blake takes on backing vocals on the love song "Got Carried Away." Murky and alluring vocals, circling guitar and lulling yet vibrant melodies connect the listener.
"There's a lot of emotion on this album," Livingston explained. "We are proud of it and think it's the best thing we've done."
Weighlifting is pure romance.
Trashcan Sinatras are currently touring the U.S.
