MUSIC REVIEW
Band: The Sounds
Album: "Dying to Say This to You"
Label: New Line Recordings
Punk bravado and sweet pop sensibilities collide with this kick ass, exuberant sophomore release, Dying to Say This to You, from Swedish band The Sounds.
Tough yet feminine vocalist Maja Ivarsson seems like the galpal you want to sit down with to deconstruct relationships over martinis and you just know she's got your back. Her powerhouse vocals drive the songs with unwavering confidence and cynical, no-holds-barred lyrics.
Having a brassy female lead is bold and refreshing and not heard enough with this type of music. The band has depth and range and the songs that result are layered, revealing and tightly constructed.
Dying to Say this To You is part open letter to former lovers/part dating handbook.
Opener "Song with a Mission" kicks in immediately with churning guitars and attitude - "without me you're nothing at all," sexy, grungy funk infuses "Tony the Beat," and things get a bit nostalgic on "Night after Night."
Dying to Say This to You works with feverish intensity as The Sounds mixes up the arrangements, keeps things fresh and provides cool addictive beats on every song.
