Band: The Stills
Album: "Without Feathers"
Label: Vice Recordings
On its sophomore release, Without Feathers, The Stills are mixing things up a bit.
In the past few years, the band has obviously meshed as unit and matured. The result on Without Feathers is varied instrumentation and complex arrangements. It is more versatile, challenging and emotionally stunning.
Without Feathers is filled with fits of frenzy, emotive melodies, songs that tear at your heartstrings and tackle desire, angst, wistfulness and relationships. There remains a gentle and passionate core through out the album. The melodies shimmer through the sweet voice of singer-guitarist Tim Fletcher - often the darkest thoughts are sung so sweetly.
"In the Beginning" churns to a staccato beat, churning guitar and thoughtful lyrics - "the person I have met/ the persons I have let down/ it's just never what it was."
The hypnotic, swaying beat of "Oh Shoplifter," emphasizes the awful feeling of love lost.
A particularly tight track is "Baby Blues" with its hip-shaking beat and boy-girl vocals (singer Emily Haines contributes to this song). It also has one of the best lines I've heard in a song: "I'm into looks/ but I'm also into books."
The Stills is one intellectual, sexy and expressive band.
