SOCIAL NETWORK TURNS STAR MAKER
By Linda Dale

Mehron - Kari Tribble - MySpace As of March, 2006, MySpace, a social networking web site offering an interactive network of photos, blogs, user profiles, groups, and an internal e-mail system, was ranked as the world's fifth most popular English language web site (according to Alexa Internet). It has left competitors such as Friendster and LiveJournal in the dust to become the most popular English language social networking web site with over 61 million users.

MySpace was founded in 2003 by Tom Anderson Chris DeWolfe and a small team of programmers. It was partially owned by Intermix Media, which was bought in July, 2005 for $580 million by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation (the parent company of Fox Broadcasting and other media enterprises). MySpace has quickly become more than a social network; it is a new launching pad for careers. It has been credited with helping establish Britain's hottest band, the Arctic Monkeys, and amateur filmmaker David Lehre, who first screened his short film MySpace: The Movie at his 21st birthday party, landed a development deal offer from MTVU and the list of MySpace breakouts is growing.

"This has completely changed the entertainment industry," explains, Kari Tribble of the band One Blue Flame. "You can now control your music and your image like never before. You can connect with other artists and musicians through MySpace. The process becomes organic. I see it as a community, you meet other artists one project and connection leads to another."

Kari and her work illustrate how life in the MySpace environment can work. The cover of "One Blue Flame's" upcoming CD is the product of another artist featured on MySpace, painter Rachel Tribble.

"Our recent music has been inspired by The Resurrection of Light," Kari continues. "The work has a similar feel as we have in our music. I wanted an image that captured that feel for our upcoming CD." And, a MySpace collaboration was born.

Mehron - Kari Tribble Using Kari as a canvas, her sister, Rachel, created the same feeling for One Blue Flame's CD cover as she has with the paintings for The Resurrection of Light. Rachel used the Paradise Color palette and glitter by Mehron in the same way she uses metal leafing in her paints. She Created layers with Mehron's base metallic makeup, and then layered different glitter colors over the base. The entire work from visuals to music is featured on One Blue Flame's MySpace site.

Having completed the image for One Blue Flame, Rachel's work caught the eye of another MySpace dweller, Justin Ash, a composer and producer of leftfield electronica who had just finished an electro ambient album for CCT Records titled conversations with id under his electro name JASH.

Justin met Rachel on MySpace and in typical MySpace fashion, this chance meeting led to a new project. Justin is currently composing a meditation piece inspired by The Resurrection of Light. Now Justin and Kari are collaborating on a new music project and the MySpace saga continues. As art and music continues to flourish on the site, new MySpace breakthroughs will emerge - Arctic Monkeys had better watch their backs.
