FONOGENIC® The Digital Sounds Boutique
It's been twelve years since James Patterson's "The Ugly Mugs" was the first band to make their music available for downloading on the web. Today the MP3
format has eclipsed all other formats and traditional labels have begun to distribute their catalogs online.
Recently, labels have supplied songs from their catalogs to online outlets ranging from mass-market destinations like iTunes to tiny music sites. If the
same music is widely available through an array of sites, outlets will face the difficult challenge of differentiating themselves. Music analysts predict
that online music will increasingly mirror traditional record stores. Labels will distribute their music online through a few major outlets, and smaller
boutique players will lead the appeal to niche markets. Consider online music's newest player, Fonogenic.com
"In the 60's and '70s, the local record stores nurtured and discovered new music. They were places to find the new sounds and hidden gems. It is that role
that Fonogenic® plays in 2005," says Tal Pink, founder of Fonogenic®
Last April, Fonogenic® officially launched its revolutionary Digital Sounds Boutique. The event, hosted by Cinespace in Hollywood, showcased artists featured on Fonogenic.com in the venue's state-of-the-art theater. Cutting edge design and unique visual projections, custom to each act in the four-hour lineup, made the evening seem more like a mini-concert than a corporate launch.
Fonogenic® offers digital downloads of songs that can be played on virtually every player on the market. The company has designed a simple and elegant interface to download individual songs and entire albums as MP3s'.
Unlike sites that recycle classic rock or label standards, Fonogenic® offers listeners the state-of-the-art of new music. The focus is on quality
not quantity. Whereas listeners visit iTunes to download music they've already heard, they visit Fonogenic® to discover new music.
"Fonogenic® is more than a download site," explains Tal. "We actively look for rising talent and new artists to add them to our catalogue. We promote our
artists on streaming radio and at live performances. We make it possible for artists to share special tracks and live shows with their fans."
The Digital Sounds Boutique features music from independent record labels and tracks from leading young artists, including songs from Universal Hall
Pass, Jim Bianco, Silver, Remote, Huge, AM, Murdocks, Max Greene, Maas Love, Gabriel Gordon, Diana Page,Erinn Williams, The Secret, Jason Darling, Project Curious, Kill Henry Sugar, Esquimaux, and Clyde Wrenn.
Although a new company, Fonogenic® is already making an impact in licensing arenas such as Remote and AM, whose music is featured on TV's #1 show C.S.I. and MTV's The Real World, respectively. Fonogenic® artists Gilad Benamram (Project Curious), Remote, and others are well represented in the soundtracks of several film festival faves. Music from Fonogenic® artists is regularly featured in advertising. The company clearly recognizes these outlets as an alternative to radio exposure in its licensing to film, television, video
games, and other emerging media.
"We believe many artists out there want to promote their music without giving up a sense of control," said Tal. "By offering artists a direct way to
broadcast and sell their material, we can deliver the music while it's still fresh - fresh for the audience, fresh for the artist. Best of all, you know that when you buy music here, artists get paid."
