DIRT - The Complete First Season
DVD review
By Amy Steele
This is Hollywood. Someone is getting screwed and somebody out there cannot wait to tell you about it.
While promising in concept-behind the scenes at a gossip rag and Courtney Cox in lead role as editor Lucy Spiller [wow, what a clever name. note: sarcasm]. Cox plays the role as a combination of her Scream reporter and Monica Gellar.
At a meeting early on, Spiller suggests the merger for Dirt and Now magazines [I'm imagining a Star magazine and an US or People] she explains it is an upscale glossy tabloid that combines the sophistication of Now with the tabloid glory of Dirt.
Sure this series has all you'd expect: the closeted action star [Melrose Place's Grant Show], a struggling actor whose career picks up when he snitches on tv-star girlfriend, the schizo photog/BFF, an ingénue reporter, a sage and jaded crime reporter [Paul Reubens] and the gay brother. What more could this series need? Maybe some good plots that the viewers actually care a bit about. Also, decide whether to be vampy or more "serious." This is FX. Viewers are used to over-the-top and a masturbating Courtney Cox is not edgy. Really. We've watched Nip/Tuck and that tongue-in-cheek series works.
Save your time.
