THE PROMISE OF HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY
The facts speak for themselves. Twenty-one million people in the United States suffer from diabetes, a staggering 7% of the population. According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 60 percent of non-traumatic lower limb amputations occur in people with diabetes, and the cost of treating non-healing lower extremity diabetic wounds totals more than $200 million annually.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a unique medical procedure used primarily for the treatment of non-healing wounds. Over 7,000,000 Americans suffer from chronic wounds and 60,000 Americans die annually from wound complications. The discovery that hyperbaric oxygen can help cases of non-healing wounds to improve is a major advancement and one of the more important health breakthroughs of our time.
Started as a submarine company by John Perry, Perry BaroMedical utilizes the same concept as a submarine (a pressurized containment unit large enough to hold a person) to become a leading provider of hyperbaric oxygen chambers used to treat medical conditions. Its SIGMA 40 is the largest monoplace chamber in the industry it had a 40-inch internal diameter, making it the largest volume for the greatest comfort.
An increase in the number of patients diagnosed with diabetes as well as a rise in obesity and complications thereof, especially among baby-boomers, means a larger pool of patients needing treatment. Currently, only 30% of hospitals in half the states have an outpatient wound care program that utilizes HBOT, but because the therapy is effective and utilizes a simple, easy-to-use technology, that number is expected to substantially, increase. As the population shifts and the need increases, HBOT programs are on the rise. The number of Medicare beneficiaries has nearly doubled. Mary Pat Finn, from Perry BaroMedical, predicts that hyperbaric oxygen therapy will eventually become a standard of care, like radiation technology, available in every hospital.
