GOUZALIA SHARAF
"DEAD END FALLS"
Gouzalia Sharaf is an inspiration and a role model for women across the world. A native of Uzbekistan, which was formerly part of the Soviet Union, Gouzalia has created a gripping and realistic film, Dead End Falls, about slave trade from Russia to the United States. She produced, directed and acted in this true to life full length feature.
The story of the film follows the journey of a mail-order Russian bride, played by Gouzalia, as she struggles to extricate herself from a web of deception, exploitation, and murder in the seamy underbelly of the international sex trade. Gouzalia said she wanted to capture, "the gritty, dangerous world that young women from Eastern Europe face when they arrive alone in this country." The film is very personal for Gouzalia. "In a lot of ways this story is based on actual experiences that I either had, or thankfully just managed to avoid when I got out here. To me, this movie is a story of women's redemption."
Determined to come to America since the age of 7, Gouzalia would often tell her mother, "I'm going to Hollywood to be an actress," but dressing up in her Mom's clothes did little to relieve the bleak economics of the Perestroika-era Soviet State where she would literally stand for hours just to get a chance to buy bread. Gouzalia quickly realized that it was more fun to be the director and found herself as the 'commander' of a group of children whenever they would play 'war.'
Gouzalia has lived in New York and Los Angeles, attended film school, worked in television as an editor, and acted in various independent film projects both in the US and abroad. Returning to L.A. for good in 2005, she has focused her talents on being behind the camera and created G Star Media, a media company that specializes in the development and production of films and other artistic multimedia concepts. Gouzalia sees a bright future for herself as a producer/director. She says she finds it gives her the most creative control and enjoyment in the film industry. She has produced and directed a number of films, but Dead End Falls has special meaning to her.
"I want to inspire people with my films and give them a sense of faith and hope. I want the viewers to feel and believe that anything is possible". Dead End Falls does give a startling account of the slave trade underworld, but it also gives a message of hope by creating awareness of a serious problem in the US and Russia. "I hope that people who see my film will feel uplifted knowing that there are people out there trying to make a difference."
